Diamond or “diaper ” patterned brickwork on the gable end of this cottage in Hathern village near Loughborough in north Leicestershire.
The later brickwork infilling of a first floor window may well relate to the punitive “Window Tax”, a tax based on the number of windows a property had. Introduced c 1696 and not repealed until c1851, 155 years later!
